2023 Volvo XC90 Redesign, Recharge, Release Date, Changes, Hybrid

The Swedish manufacturer is working on the next generation of its mid-size SUV, which would replace the current XC90. As the current model is still impressive in many ways, it makes sense that the company doesn’t rush. Most likely, the all-new model will come in a year or two, which clearly indicates that the 2023 Volvo XC90 is about to come without more important changes. It will be a typical carryover model and the best we could see are a few additions to the list of standard equipment and maybe a new color option. Other than that, things will remain the same.

So, you may count on a familiar design and familiar pros and cons. The current generation has been around since 2015 but it still has a lot of good things to show. We like the interior design, both in terms of quality and space. Furthermore, there is a generous list of standard and available equipment, as well as a wide range of competent powertrain options.

Considering all this, we presume that the 2023 Volvo XC90 will come without changes, sometime in the last quarter of the year.

2023 Volvo XC90 Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the current generation has been around since 2015 and it rides on the company’s familiar SPA platform. Not many things have changed since the initial launch. The styling is pretty much the same, which minor tweaks that happened a few years ago. This SUV features classic aesthetical solutions and, therefore, it aged pretty well. The next year shouldn’t bring any notable change, though there is always a chance for things like new color options and visual packages.

The same thing goes for mechanics. This SUV features an FWD layout, though all-wheel drive is available too. The ride is comfortable, though models with bigger wheels can be a little firm. At the same time, rivals like BMW X5 and Audi Q7 offer a little bit more engaging handling.

Interior

This is arguably the strongest point of the SUV. Despite the age, the cabin looks impressive. We really like the minimalistic design of the dashboard, which looks very elegant and stylish. Furthermore, the materials are pretty impressive too, just like the overall build quality. There’s a lot of attention to detail, while the long list of tech features makes the cabin look even more upscale.

This cabin isn’t just luxurious, but also very comfortable. There is plenty of room in the first two rows, while the third row seems decent as well. The front seats are massive and supportive, with excellent driving position and lots of adjustability options. Also, the sound insulation is pretty good.

When it comes to the cargo area, you may count on about 15.8 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats, 41.8 cubic feet with these seats folded, and 85.7 cubic feet of the total cargo volume. This is probably the largest cargo area in the segment.

Features

We may see a couple of novelties on the list of standard equipment for the next year but most of the things should remain the same. Therefore, all models should come standard with quad-zone climate control, panoramic moonroof, keyless entry, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, wireless device charging, satellite radio, a 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. Among options, expect to find things like premium audio systems, rear sunshades and ambient lighting.

When it comes to safety, all models should come standard with a rearview camera, parking sensors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, road sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beams etc. A few upgrades like head-up display, surround-view camera and hands-free parking system are available too.

2023 Volvo XC90 Engines

Things under the hood will remain the same as well. So, base models will continue with a familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 250 horsepower. While that’s enough power to satisfy most drivers, there is also a version with the additional supercharger, which provides a max output of 316 horsepower. Finally, there is a plug-in hybrid version, which pairs this engine with an electric motor, for a total output of 400 horsepower. With this version, you may also count on 18 miles of the all-electric range.

All models come in pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission from Aisin, which does a pretty good job.

2023 Volvo XC90 Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2023 Volvo XC90 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year, with a starting price of around 52.000 dollars. Key competitors are models like Audi Q7, BMW X5, Acura MDX etc.
