The curious case of the Toyota 4Runner is something that has been bothering marketing experts in the last several years. The problem lays in the fact that, as this model gets older it also gets more popular. While some wonder why, we believe that things are pretty simple. There aren’t many genuine SUV models anymore, especially in the mid-size class. Practically, models like Wrangler and the upcoming Bronco are too small, while models like Tahoe or Expedition are too big for many drivers. The 4Runner seems like a perfect balance. So, despite the popularity, it’s time for changes. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is about to come completely new, according to the latest reports. At this point, we don’t know too many details about the new model, but we know for sure it will continue to ride on a body-on-frame platform. Of course, we will see a new one and that will be a downsized version of the new TNGA-F platform, which is about to debut in the new Tundra. Of course, the platform will be used for other BoF models as well, including models like Sequoia, 4Runner and several with a Lexus badge.
Exterior Design
When it comes to the exterior design, we presume that there won’t be too many changes in terms of size. While crossovers are getting bigger and bigger with every redesign, we expect that the 2022 Toyota 4Runner won’t become much bigger. This is where we expect to see some interesting novelties. The current model comes with a reliable but pretty outdated 4.0-liter V6, which is capable but also quite thirsty. Therefore, it will probably be replaced with something smaller and more efficient, probably with a 3.5-liter V6, the same one that can be found in Tacoma.
However, this probably won’t be the only powertrain option in the offer. We also count on a hybrid version, which will sit at the top of the offer. The exact details are still unknown, but we expect a lot of power in a combination with solid mpg ratings.
