The current generation of Ford’s biggest SUV in the lineup is still quite fresh. It has been around for just a couple of years, so there is still no need for bigger changes. The same thing goes for its long-wheelbase version, which will, for the next year, come as the 2021 Ford Expedition MAX. It will come with a handful of novelties only. The most notable are new wheels, while we are also about to see more available features in base models, especially in terms of safety. Other than that, things are about to remain the same.
This means you may count on the same overall design, which is mostly about practicality and functionality. This is one of the biggest SUVs you can get around, which easily accommodates eight adult passengers and offers a tremendous amount of cargo space. At the same time, it benefits from the lightweight aluminum chassis, which is the same one that undeprints the super-popular F-150 pickup truck. As a result, performances and efficiency are pretty impressive for a vehicle of this size. We expect the 2021 Ford Expedition MAX will hit the market sometime late in the year.
2021 Ford Expedition MAX Redesign
As we’ve just mentioned, the 2021 Ford Expedition MAX is coming with just a couple of novelties and when it comes to the design, the only notable thing is a set of new wheels for each trim level. Other than that, things are pretty familiar. This is a long-wheelbase version of the standard Expedition model and it uses the same mechanics but comes with a notably longer body and wheelbase. It measures around 131.6 inches between the axles, which ensures plenty of room for passengers and cargo.
Visually, there are no significant differences compared to the standard model, except for the longer wagon body. The front end is pretty much identical and offers pretty classic design solutions. The same goes for the rest of the vehicle.
Interior
When it comes to interior design, we don’t expect to see any particular change for the next year. This means you may count on the same layout, which is mostly about plenty of space. This SUV comes with three rows of seats and a seating capacity for eight passengers. All rows are pretty generous with space and even the third one has plenty of legroom to accommodate adults with ease. Still, that’s not any different from the standard model. The aspect where this stretched model really benefits is the cargo space. You may count on about 36 cubic feet behind the third row, 79.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum of 121.5 cubic feet. These are pretty high ratings for the class, though the new Chevy Suburban and GMC Yukon XL offer even more impressive numbers.
When it comes to the dashboard design, you won’t notice any difference compared to the standard model. The overall build quality is good, though there is a lot of influence from the F-150, which makes this cabin look quite utilitarian. Still, higher trim levels come with nice materials and looks pretty luxurious.
Features
When it comes to features, the biggest novelty is that the company’s familiar Co-Pilot360 Assist suite of safety features is now optional in the base XLT model, not standard. This package includes numerous safety systems, such as high-beam headlights, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and forward automatic emergency braking. So, base models now come standard with a rearview camera, rear parking sensors and Ford’s MyKey only.
When it comes to tech goodies, we don’t expect bigger changes for the next year. This means that base models will probably come with goodies like an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, voice recognition, four USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. In higher trim levels, you may also count on features like wireless device charging, a household-style power outlet, navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, HD Radio, premium audio system and more.
2021 Ford Expedition MAX Engine
Under the hood, the 2021 Ford Expedition MAX will carry on with a well-known 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. It features a max output of 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. In the Platinum trim, the max power goes up to 400 horses and 480 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which does a pretty good job. Furthermore, 4×4 models also include a two-speed transfer case.
Thanks to the lightweight aluminum construction, as well as to the engine’s efficiency, this SUV features some of the higher mpg ratings in the class. It returns around 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Those is really impressive for a vehicle of this size.
